Word lists
Your child will be expected to participate in our word list program. We have word lists that your child needs to learn before the end of first grade. Your child’s reading fluency will greatly improve once they know these words. The words on the lists are the most often used in writing and when your child knows these words their comprehension and fluency levels increase. Please help by going over these words each night. When your child knows the words on a list, send in the list. We will test them over the words and if they know them we will send home a new list. This is one of the easiest and best ways that you can help your child become a better reader. Thanks for helping your child become a successful reader. Here are the 50 word lists that we will cover this year.
Book-in-a-bag
We are beginning our “Book in a Bag” program. Each day your child will bring home a book that he/she has selected. This is a daily responsibility for your child to choose a book. We ask that you and your child share the book and record the information on the reading log sheet in the bag. Your child’s goal is to read and log 160 books during the year. In order for this to be most beneficial for your child the reading should be done on a daily basis. Reading logs will be checked and collected at the end of each month to monitor progress. A treat will be given for each completed page. This is a shared reading experience. You may read to your child, have your child read to you, or both! Your child may read other books at home to add to the record sheet. Please remember the books are not leveled and are self selected. We want the children to select books they are interested in even if they are not yet at that reading level. The purpose of this daily activity is to promote reading skills and the enjoyment of literature. The more children read the better they become at reading! If you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you for supporting our school to home reading program.
